Speedo Partner with the Royal Life Saving Society to Combat Drowning Globally
The Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) is working to eliminate drowning in the Commonwealth and Speedo is supporting this lifesaving work.
RLSS have active members and partners covering 30 Commonwealth countries, developing community-based drowning prevention strategies and lifesaving education programmes to help tackle the issue of drowning in their regions.
As part of a two-year partnership, Speedo will be providing funding to RLSS for two projects:
- Member Grants Programme – enabling RLSS Commonwealth members from around the world to apply for grants to support in the delivery of their water safety and drowning prevention initiatives.
- Annual Drowning Prevention Project – supporting a larger scale project particularly focused in a developing country where drowning rates are particularly high.
Speedo have been supporting the RLSS since 2016 but are now pleased to have a formalised partnership in place as a commitment to support the RLSS with the great work they’re doing as experts in drowning prevention.
Annual Drowning Prevention Project – Malaysia
The selected annual drowning prevention project for 2019-2020 is a project focused on survival swimming in disadvantaged communities in Malaysia. Media reports from October 2017 reveal that Malaysia records a total of 700 cases of drowning, of which 500 involve children ages between 1 and 18 years old.
RLSS will support its member, the Life Saving Society Malaysia and 3 to 6 local disadvantaged communities in reducing drowning by expanding a survival swimming programme. We anticipate this programme will also encourage women and children to be more active while learning important life skills.
